HTD 660 (Hidden Threat Detector)

The new HTD660 portable dielectric anomaly detector is a hand-held instrument that utilizes patented near-field technology to locate hidden contraband. It can be used by law enforcement in various countries to locate drugs and other contraband that are hidden in blocks of frozen fish/shrimp, suspended in bottled beverages, and stored in false compartments in walls, floors boat hulls, etc. Organizations in several countries employ the HTD660's predecessor the M600, such as the United States Customs, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Taiwanese Coast Guard, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as well as law enforcement groups in the United Kingdom and Israel. The energy format is non-cumulative sustains a safe level, even after repeated microwave exposures.

How does it work?

The HTD660 utilizes the EMIT technology measuring system to detect the presence of an anomaly. EMIT Technology measurement systems do not attempt to identify specific materials. Instead, they create a very detailed set of parameters for one material, and use that data as a reference against which an unknown volume of material may be compared. The system then presents the differences between the unknown and the known reference to an operator. Put simply, the EMIT Technology determines anomalies against established reference data points.

The HTD660, when placed against the material in question, such as a boat hull, ect., analyzes the density of its surface using microwave technology. It is capable of penetrating a variety of materials including wood, plastic, ceramic, and textiles. Any variance from the known density signals a need for further interrogation. Because different materials have varying densities, unexpected changes are obvious. The measurements taken by the HTD660 translate into relative density readings that can be easily interpreted to detect anomalies, or differences, in materials that indicate the presence of hidden contraband. The result is a rapid comprehensive, portable, and cost effective method for locating hidden contraband.

HTD660 (Hidden Threat Detector) FAQ

Question: What is the HTD660 Hidden Threat Detector?

Answer: The HTD660 Hidden Threat Detector is a dielectric hand-held scanner that utilizes EMIT's patented near-field microwave technology to detect anomalies in various materials. The HTD660 is primarily used by border control and enforcement agencies to locate drugs and other contraband that may be hidden in boxes of goods, blocks of frozen fish/shrimp, blocks of granite/stone, suspended in bottled beverages, or stored in false compartments in walls, floors, boat hulls, etc. The small size and portability of the HTD660 makes it a unique tool for the investigator to conduct on the spot checks.

Question: What is the operating principle of the HTD660?

Answer: The HTD660 produces a very low-level 600MHz microwave signal that is transmitted into the test material. The microwave energy interacts with the test material and a portion of the microwave energy is reflected back into the HTD660 where the unique elliptical antenna collects the measurement and displays the results on the LCD display located at the back of the unit. The numeric value being displayed on the meter is related to the reflection coefficient of the material, which translates into relative density readings of the material. The unique elliptical antenna enables the HTD660 to focus the microwave energy simultaneously in the material and receive the reflected energy back from the material. This makes it possible to take measurements of materials that are inside of containers (such as cardboard, fiberglass, glass, plastics, wood, etc.).

Question: How does the HTD660 work?

Answer: The HTD660 is placed against the known material or object (i.e. a box and its contents) to be measured. The operator then pushes the "Sample" button on the HTD660 to establish a base-line measurement of the known material that can then be used to detect anomalies - differences in measurement - in materials and objects that should have a uniform measurement. A sharply different measurement would indicate a different substance, which would indicate a need for further investigation. The HTD660 does not attempt to identify specific materials; instead it creates a very detailed measurement of the given, or known, material and then uses that data as a reference to compare against other material or objects to determine if it is of the same composition.

Question: What can the HTD660 detect?

Answer: Since the HTD660 is an anomaly detector, it is capable of detecting anything of sufficient volume that may be concealed in various materials, making it an extremely effective and rapid scanning system for screening shipments such as boxes and bales of goods, bottled beverages, and for detecting false panels and compartments.

Question: What is the range of the HTD660?

Answer: The depth of penetration for the HTD660 is about 3.5ft. in air and is correspondingly less depending on the dielectric properties of the materials being tested. For example, the HTD660 can penetrate up to 18" of concrete or stone such as granite, and up to 5" of water.

Question: Does the HTD660 work on baggage?

Answer: No, the system is designed and optimized for rapid screening of materials and objects that should be uniform in their contents, such as blocks of frozen fish, shrimp, or boxes of goods.

Question: Is the radiant energy that a person is exposed to safe?

Answer: Independent testing from recognized laboratories have conclusively demonstrated that the microwave technology used in developing EMIT's products are substantially lower than the safety levels allowed by the US FDA and US Government.

Question: If there is a mechanical or electronic failure, can the system expose people to excessive microwave radiation?

Answer: No. The microwave energy utilized is of an extremely low level, and is non-cumulative and non-ionizing. The output energy is less than 1/100 of the US Govt.'s safety level for microwave ovens. There are no safety hazards associated with the HTD660.

Question: Is the technology for the HTD660 proprietary?

Answer: Yes, EMIT Technologies owns the entire patent history for this technology with many issued patents for the dielectric detection technology used by the HTD660.

Question: How long does it take to train the operators?

Answer: While initial training can be completed within a few hours, the key to successful use of the HTD660 lies with the operator's ability to interpret the information being supplied by the unit. This interpretation will be as good as the operator's familiarity with the HTD660 and its reactions for various materials.

Question: What are the operating conditions for HTD660?

Answer: The HTD660 is designed to operate from 0 Degrees to 40 Degrees C (32 Degress to 104 Degrees F) and can also operate in high humidity environments as long as condensation does not occur on internal components.

Question: How reliable is the HTD660?

Answer: In designing the HTD660, components were specified and designed with a major emphasis on reliability, durability and ease of maintenance.

Question: What about routine maintenance?

Answer: It is recommended to have the HTD660 returned to the factory every 12 months for calibration and tune-up. This will ensure the proper operation of the HTD660 at optimum levels.

Question: What about a warranty?

Answer: EMIT Technologies warrants the HTD660 Hidden Threat Detector for a period of one (1) year from date of purchase against defects in workmanship and materials under normal use and operating conditions.
